The greatest cast in the history of cinema?

The Expendables Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sly Stallone, Jet Li, Ben Kingsley (or Eric Roberts), Dolph Lundgren, Forest Whitaker, Arnie and...err...Sandra Bullock? JCVD has apparently declined due to a lack of script, that's interesting in itself. I'd like to see Steven Seagal, Jesse "The Body" Ventura and Bruce Willis added to the mix. Why not?

Three is the magic number

/Film, perhaps the finest blog focusing on all things cinema, has come across a really cool graphical representation (by Dan Meth) of how great the cinematic trilogies are. One thing though, where the hell is Bourne?

The first step to becoming a better PR professional is...

...read more. Grrr. I'm constantly amazed by how little people in my industry read. It is not for me to name and shame people, but I'll just say that one of the reasons why people work in PR must be because they take an interest in the media...emerging, traditional or otherwise. It does make me rather angry when it is so obvious that people haven't the knowledge they'd have had they taken an interest in the world, the media, the PR industry and the direction in which we are all heading. My awesome director at Bite Communications Paul Mackender always said that if you didn't read the Economist there was no point being in PR, I completely agree with him although I've obviously extended my reading list somewhat and I suggest you all do the same. Knowledge is the pathway to glory. Opening out this out to Robin, Robert, Wadds, Drew and Ged and anyone else that has an opinion on the matter.

My opinion about bonuses

In the most part I don't really understand why bonuses exist, there are in essence a lump sum of money given to someone for doing a good job. Surely someone should just get a salary increase or promotion if they are performing well in the work place? I know it is slightly more complicated than that, especially in the banking sector, but if the process was simplified then I'm positive there would be less arguments, people would know where they stood and we wouldn't have got into as deep water as we are in now, a complete balls up. This situation also should had been cleaned up a long time ago, it is just another example of the current UK government pushing out mixed messages and most importantly moving too late.

The Watchmen

I'm all over The Watchmen, the new film based on the famous and cracking cartoon novel of the same title. Snakes on a Plane a few years ago was the first film to truly utilise digital marketing as a way of promoting a movie to a cult status. The Watchmen, however, is now setting the president. Videos such as trailers and the one below are being leaked across the web, as is interesting artwork and photography. Warner Bros has also created a social media hub 'I Watch The Watchmen' with the sole purpose of getting advocates to spread the word across the web. Officially this strategy rocks, I'm impressed and I just hope the film lives up to the hype. Bring it on!

Disclaimer - Warner Bros is a Weber Shandwick client, but we've not worked on this activity.

The William Gleeson Memorial Fund

My best friend Henry lost his nephew of just five months old last year, a situation no one or family should have to go through. I'm very close to the family too so my heart goes out to them for what has been a devastating experience. Henry and I, in memory of William Gleeson, will be walking 126 miles in Ireland in 7-9 days, a challenge called the Kerry Way. In Henry's own words here are the details should you want to sponsor us... My nephew, William Pio Timmis Gleeson, was born on the 17th May 2008. Unfortunately, his birth was premature with a number of complications including the inability to build his own immune system. He was extremely well cared for by all the staff at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Dublin; however having successfully found a near perfect match for a bone marrow transplant from Europe, William very sadly gave up his fight for life due to an infection on the 18th October 2008. My sister William’s mother, Sarah Gleeson, together with her husband Des have decided to help the hospital by setting up ‘The William Gleeson Memorial Fund’. The aim of which is to raise money to help research into Bone Marrow Failure in children. This fund will not only support children at the Dublin Hospital but also worldwide due to the Bone Marrow Donor program being available internationally. The team at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children work extremely closely with hospitals such as Great Ormond Street and Newcastle, sending some patients to the UK and children's hospitals in Europe. I am sure you will agree it is an extremely worthwhile cause and in turn I hope that future children will have a better chance of surviving. Obviously, we wouldn’t allow you to handover money without a challenge to hand!! From the 4th – 13th April 2009 myself and Jonny Rosemont will be undertaking ‘The Kerry Way’. This is a 126 mile (203 km) walk through Ireland’s spectacular mountain landscapes in the South West, starting and finishing in the town of Killarney. With the unpredictable Irish weather, over a variety of terrain, past lakes and over high passes our aim is to complete the walk within 9 days.
Our route is set out below with the dates that we expect to be at each stop in the evening. A number of people have expressed interest in the past of walking the last couple of days with us. If you wish to do so please do not hesitate to let us know and we can provide you with information on flights and accommodation etc.
Sat 4th April - to Black Valley (14 miles) Sun 5th April - to Glencar (12 miles) Mon 6th April - to Glenbeigh (11 miles) Tues 7th April - to Caherciveen (17 miles) Wed 8th April - to Waterville (19 miles) Thurs 9th April - to Caherdaniel (8 miles) Fri 10th April - to Sneem (11 miles) Sat 11th April - to Kenmare (19 miles) Sun 12th April - to Killarney (15 miles) This will be one of the most enduring walks we have done so we do hope you will sponsor us in aid of a very worthy cause. You are able to sponsor us online through www.cmrf.org/williamgleesonfund Many thanks for all contributions, Kind regards, Henry

Obama - smoking hot

Obama is now a modern cultural icon, but will he instigate change? Check out NewsBiscuit for an amusing take on the new president. I've also come across this neat little tool as to whether or not he actually goes through with his policy announcements. I'd love it for the UK government and politicians to do the same.

Film Review: Slumdog Millionaire

It is very rare that a film comes along and completely enchants you. Slumdog Millionaire, the new film from Danny Boyle, is one such film. The current economic climate and recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai has meant that this film couldn't have been more timely...a real feel good movie that showcases the best aspects of humanity during times of adversity. In Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, two new stars are born with their utterly convincing portrayal of silver screen love; I hope to see a lot more from them both. There really isn't one wrong foot in the whole film, it has a great ensemble, a cracking soundtrack and Danny Boyle has proven that he can address any subject cinematically and make it appealing to an international audience. If this film doesn't pick up the Oscar it will be a travesty as it really is the perfect film for these trailing times. Escapism at its finest.

Save the wrestlers

I should be but I'm not really ashamed to admit it but when I was growing up I was a keen advocate of wrestling, particularly WWF. And I’m very much looking forward the Mickey Rourke film that is about to come out, which he’s odds on favourite to win an Oscar for. Empire magazine has done a feature on where all my past heroes (Ultimate Warrior, Legion of Doom, Hacksaw Jim Duggan etc) are now and it is seriously depressing reading. It seems most of them have suffered from drink or drug issues, or have had untimely deaths for whatever a reason. It seems there needs to be an charity organisation created to save wrestlers from themselves. These guys were my heroes. Fake I hear you say...
